GLOBAL COMPETENCE of MANAGEMENT & GLOBAL CAPACITY of the ORGANIZATION
Global Competence is first and foremost an attitude whereby executive and management embrace change and ambiguity, and have strong capacity to accept and adapt quickly to different cultures, norms, religions and economic systems.
A critical success factor, each firm must either already have Global Competence or be dedicated to develop, or committed to hire the appropriate staff.
For smaller SME, learning the language is normally the starting point, and it should be learned in-country and in context of that culture, and not in a classroom in Canada. At the very least management must be able to read contracts, and be able to carry on polite conversation.
For larger firms, or where fully autonomous business units are anticipated, then globally competent staff can be hired, although in this case, it is imperative that appropriate monitoring and reporting be implemented to avoid the all too common project / venture hijack.
